As the Jazz Journalists Association's 14th Annual Jazz Awards ceremony and reception kick off in lower Manhattan on the afternoon of Monday, June 14, the Jazzschool will be hosting a free public satellite party in downtown Berkeley from 12:30 to 3:30 PDT.

The Jazzschool invites musicians, students, journalists, and jazz fans to view online streaming video of the New York event, and to toast trumpeter-bandleader-educator Khalil Shaheed, newly named “Jazz Hero, Bay Area" by the JJA. Attendees--including honoree Shaheed--will have the opportunity to watch a streaming video of the New York event taking place at City Winery and to keep up in real time as winners of the Jazz Awards in 41 categories are announced.

Artists scheduled to perform at the JJA Awards include Marc Carey, Tia Fuller, and the Bobby Sanabria Big Band.

“The JJA is eager to spread news of the Jazz Awards, which celebrate excellence in all things jazz," says JJA president Howard Mandel, “and we're excited to try streaming video for the first time so that people beyond the events can see and hear what happens onstage. It's especially gratifying to have JJA 'A Team' honorees Susan Muscarella and Terri Hinte organize a Bay Area party at the Jazzschool, gathering the community and toasting Bay Area jazz hero Khalil Shaheed. If I could be in two places at once, I'd be at the Jazzschool as well as at City Winery!"

The Berkeley party is being organized by Muscarella (founder/director of the Jazzschool) and Hinte (independent publicist who represents the Jazzschool). Both women have been inducted previously by the JJA--in 2008 and 2006 respectively--into its “A Team" of “activists, advocates, altruists, aiders, and abettors of jazz" in recognition of their careers in educational and informational work.

“We are thrilled to connect with the Jazz Journalists Association on this important occasion," says Muscarella, “especially as we come to the end of our successful first year with the Jazzschool Institute. We look forward to collaborating with the JJA on an even bigger scale for next year's satellite party."

A complete list of Jazz Award nominees appears here.

JJA Jazz Awards' Berkeley party will take place at the Jazzschool, 2087 Addison Street in Berkeley, on Monday, June 14, from 12:30 to 3:30 pm. Free admission.
