The 92nd Street Y, New York announces Jazz in July 2025, the 40th season for this mainstay of New York’s summer culture season, returning under the artistic directorship of Aaron Diehl. Jazz in July features six concerts from July 15-24 and tickets—on sale today—are available here. Concerts are in person and online, with streams available for 72 hours after the initial broadcast.
This season’s festival includes big bands, the sounds and rhythm of Puerto Rico, and a concert celebrating two jazz legends. Opening and closing nights feature large ensembles in Kaufmann Concert Hall: The Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra makes their first Jazz in July appearance, joined by longtime festival favorite John Pizzarelli, and Darcy James Argue’s Secret Society—also making their first appearance—joined by Aaron Diehl. A mid-fest, multi-generational tenor sax extravaganza of solos and duels features Melissa Aldana, first appearances by Walter Smith III, Lew Tabackin and Chris Lewis; and an evening celebrating Geri Allen and Mary Lou Williams includes Terri Lyne Carrington and Vanisha Gould—both in their first 92NY appearances.
The intimate Buttenwieser Hall at the Arnhold Center showcases two mainstays of the city’s jazz scene in their Jazz in July debuts. Carlos Henriquez Nonet features the rich colors, nuances and rhythmic complexity of Latin musical tradition. Marta Sánchez Quintet brings the idiosyncratic voice of a prolific composer whose work incorporates folk traditions of Spain.

The sensational Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra— led by bassist John Clayton and drummer Jeff Hamilton—swings into NYC from LA for the first time in more than a decade to kick off Jazz in July 2025. The big band of choice for artists including Diana Krall, John Pizzarelli, Samara Joy, and others, the 20-piece ensemble of top LA jazz greats reflects influences from Ellington to Gil Evans to Quincy Jones, with a sound all their own.

Carlos Henriquez was recognized for his talent at just 14 by Wynton Marsalis, who has been a champion ever since. Along with his work with the Wynton Marsalis Septet, Henriquez—the now-longtime bassist of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra—has performed and recorded with music legends including Bob Dylan, Stevie Wonder, Willie Nelson, Latin music giant Eddie Palmieri, Cuban jazz pianist Chucho Valdés, and many others. Henriquez is also a brilliant composer, whose own music reflects influences from Tito Puente to Dizzy Gillespie, but more than anything, is steeped in the music, heart, and soul of his Puerto Rican heritage. He joins us with his brilliant nonet, rich with brass and winds, for an evening of rhythmic, high-energy Nuyorican jazz.

Grammy-nominated Aldana is a winner of the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition and premier contemporary post-bop player who leads her own acclaimed quartet and has worked with artists from Jimmy Heath to Cécile McLorin Salvant. The inventive young Chris Lewis is in demand by artists from Wynton Marsalis to Herbie Hancock to Michael Buble. Walter Smith III has played with Joe Lovano, Terence Blanchard, Dee Dee Bridgewater, and others, and brings cool sophistication to the post-bop tradition. Hard bop tenor master Lew Tabackin’s distinctive sound and musical vision have made him a singular talent on the instrument across decades and across work with his bands with Toshiko Akiyoshi, and years of collaboration with jazz greats including Roland Hanna, Hank Jones, Elvin Jones, and many others. Geri Allen and Mary Lou Williams were two of the most influential artists and creative forces in jazz. In their respective eras, each was a towering pianist, groundbreaking composer, and innovator with bold conceptions of what jazz could be. Allen was a passionate champion of the supremely influential Williams, and a litany of jazz greats have been champions of Allen. Among them is NEA Jazz Master and four-time Grammy-winning drummer, composer, and producer Terri Lyne Carrington, a jazz powerhouse and force of nature who worked closely with and revered Allen and leads this Jazz in July celebration. Joining Carrington are Vanisha Gould—a transfixing jazz vocalist and storyteller and rising star with one foot in jazz tradition and the other in her own extraordinary original music—and the phenomenal Nicole Glover—a member of Christian McBride's Ursa Major, supergroup Artemis, and much more — on tenor sax. Completing the line-up is Aaron Diehl – himself an impassioned champion of Williams—and acclaimed bassist Yusushi Nakamura, Carrington’s co-curator of the evening, for celebration of two pioneering jazz icons.

Spanish pianist and composer Marta Sánchez has quietly become of the most compelling artists in global jazz. And not always quietly—The New York Times included her debut album as leader among its Best Albums of the Year across genres, placing her in the company of Kendrick Lamar and Adele. Her recordings consistently rank among the best jazz albums of the year in Downbeat and other key jazz media, and she tours regularly as a member of the David Murray Quartet in addition to dates with her trio and quintet. She joins us with her brilliant saxophone-forward quintet—a global group of outstanding musicians from Spain, France, Cuba, Canada, and Israel. Sánchez’s music is accessible and melody-driven, yet reflective of a strikingly original compositional voice drawing inspiration from medieval music, Debussy, pop, and everything in between.

Composer-bandleader Darcy James Argue’s 18-piece ensemble Secret Society is one of the most dynamic and acclaimed large ensembles in jazz, reimagining what a modern big band can be. They perform a set of Argue’s compositions before the Aaron Diehl Trio joins for Diehl’s “Organic Consequence” from his acclaimed Space, Time, Continuum album—the piece arranged by Argue for big band. The concert culminates in the world premiere of A Banquet for the Birds, Argue’s new suite for piano and jazz orchestra—a thrilling new work inspired by Emily Wilson’s acclaimed new translation of The Iliad—written for Diehl, and co-commissioned by 92NY and the NDR Bigband. Experience the vibrant, nuanced, wildly inventive music that is Argue’s signature—what Jazzwise called “a heady elixir of the past, the present and an imagined future.”
