Randy Weston is one of the most original, prolific and influential pianist-composers in jazz. To his credit, Weston's distinctive sound is easily recognizable, for he is best known for the crafting of the Brooklyn-Moroccan connection that is now as natural as any idiom in contemporary jazz.

Stefon Harris, the young man with a vibraphone and marimba, has won GRAMMY nominations for best jazz album for his “Black Action Figure" and “Kindred" CD's. Widely touted as a powerful improviser, as well as a lover of funk, R&B, and classical music, Harris has been involved in numerous projects, including soundtracks for “Girlfight" and “Rosewood."

Jann Parker, though she may not have as much name recognition, is no stranger to the jazz scene. Last year, Ms. Parker brought the audience to their feet at JAZZ IN THE VALLEY and the participants have been calling for her return. Parker has performed with Randy Weston, Steve Turre, John Hicks, Larry Ridley, Bill Cosby and Ron Carter, among others. Her debut CD, Voicings, was released this winter and is receiving airplay nationwide.

“The afternoon is a testament to jazz as a world music that is integral of American culture," said Greer Smith, Executive Director of TRANSART. “We have put together a line-up that presents great music from a living legend, a young master of jazz and a fast rising-star. Since its beginnings with jazz legend Ahmad Jamal, we have kicked off what appears to be a long and successful marriage of jazz and the Hudson Valley."

Since its successful launch in August 2000, JAZZ IN THE VALLEY is growing into a distinguished annual affair. Previous performaers include Ahmand Jamal, Ron Carter, and Roy Hargrove. True to its mission, JAZZ IN THE VALLEY also earmarks its proceeds to further the cultural education of youth in the area who are not regularly exposed to jazz or art.

Join us, rain or shine, and bring your blankets for lawn seating! Presented by TRANSART and Cultural Services

TRANSART & Cultural Services is a non-profit arts organization whose mission is three fold: to expose the arts, history, and popular culture of Africa and its Diaspora to American audiences in New York State; to reduce the barriers that have resulted in certain communities having little or no access to art; and to utilize art to promote learning. TRANSART continues to play a pivotal role in helping diverse audiences understand and appreciate a non-western aesthetic by providing fact-based information and by developing cultural and educational programs. Since relocating to the Mid-Hudson Valley five years ago, the organization has used innovative programming to heighten the awareness of African Americans' contributions to the region.
