Today, GRAMMY-nominated ensemble Terri Lyne Carringnton + Social Science announced their new sophomore album Trip the Night Fantastic – a genre-defying amalgamation of art and activism slated for release on July 31 via Candid Records. Alongside the new album announcement is the release of its first single, “Autonomy Song,” a compelling declaration of women’s independence and self-determination, featuring renowned artists Ledisi, Brandee Younger, Tarriona “Tank” Ball, and J. Blending jazz with old-school R&B, “Autonomy Song” tackles reproductive rights and freedom from domestic violence. It transforms heavy social critique into a soulful, movement-inspiring groove, reclaiming the narrative around women’s liberation with a message that is both celebratory and cautionary. The track forgoes the stylistic tropes typically associated with anthemic themes and instead enlists potent prose from J.Ivy and Tarriona “Tank” Ball, paired beautifully with Ledisi’s majestic balladry and Brandee Younger’s shimmering harp arpeggios. Carrington also delivers a striking spoken-word passage that culminates in the line: “And if you care or give a damn at all, then pay attention to the times. It’s my body, my mind, my freedom, it’s my time!”

“Women have been oppressed for centuries—physically and otherwise,” says Carrington. “A woman has the right and capacity to make her own decisions about her life, her body, her future—including reproductive rights, sexual freedom, and all forms of self-determination and liberation. Nor should a woman be subjected to violence or any kind of abuse. Ledisi, Tank, and J. Ivy (a dream team) nailed these points home in their own remarkably singular ways.”

Speaking further on the collaboration, Tarriona “Tank” Ball adds, “It was so special and empowering to be a part of any project that Terri has! To be joined by Ledisi is equally special for me. My contribution of poetry is about a Black woman’s body being hers, fully and without apology. It pushes back against the ways people try to define, judge, or control it, and instead centers our voice and our choices. I wanted to show the body not as something for others to claim or interpret, but as a space of power, identity, and our very own freedom of what we choose to do with it.”

The acclaimed Social Science collective (Matthew Stevens, Aaron Parks, and Morgan Guerin), led by four-time GRAMMY Award-winning drummer, educator, and activist Terri Lyne Carrington, returns with a new record to follow up their 2019 GRAMMY-nominated debut, Waiting Game. Boasting an illustrious roll call of emcees, spoken word artists, and instrumentalists, Trip the Night Fantastic explores systemic and contemporary themes that demand the listener’s attention, call them to action, and add stunning breadth to the time-honored tradition of amalgamating art and activism. Climate change, immigration, gender justice, women’s empowerment, community building, and animal rights are all elucidated with a freshness, depth, and creative brilliance that can only be birthed from a group whose creative core is rooted in empathy and humanity.
