The idea of a summer jazz festival here was conceived as a way of bringing people of all ages together to “swing” and experience the art of jazz in the bucolic setting of Olmsted’s historic park. “Swingin' in Mothers Rest has grown into a popular summer series enjoyed by music fans of all ages,” said Mayor Thomas M. Menino. “Thanks to the city's partnership with the Fenway Civic Association and Berklee College of Music, we are able to bring another season of top-notch jazz to the Back Bay Fens.”

Wednesday, July 13, Lin Biviano: Biviano, an Associate Professor in Berklee’s Ensemble Department, is internationally known as lead trumpet player with such notables as Woody Herman, Buddy Rich, Maynard Ferguson, Stan Kenton, Count Basie, Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Sarah Vaughn, and Ella Fitzgerald. Biviano has also performed in numerous Broadway shows, including A Chorus Line, Mame, and No No Nanette, and has recorded on Columbia, RCA, Creative World Records, and numerous independent labels. Biviano will be performing with a sextet.

Wednesday, July 20, Mike Tucker Quartet: Led by saxophonist and Danvers native Tucker, MTQ - comprised of drummer Lee Fish, bassist Hogue Hwayn, pianist Lawrence Fields, and guest vocalist Esperanza Spalding - is emerging as one of the most dynamic and exciting groups in the area. A forward-thinking group drawing inspiration from the jazz masters, and from current popular and world music, the MTQ captivates audiences with inspired performances. Tucker has performed at the Aspen Jazz Festival, the Kennedy Center, and in Japan and Costa Rica, and has appeared with George Duke, Dennis Chambers, and Russell Ferrante and Marcus Baylor of the Yellowjackets. He also recorded two of his compositions with Pat Metheny and Gary Burton producing. This summer, the quartet will perform at the JVC Jazz Festival, and at the Cape Cod Jazz Fest. A semi-finalist in the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition, Tucker is quickly gaining the respect of the jazz community.

Wednesday, July 27, Berklee Jazz Workshop directed by Terri Lyne Carrington and Rick DiMuzio: The Berklee Jazz Workshop is comprised of the best and brightest high school jazz players from around the country, who are studying at Berklee under acclaimed drummer Terri Lyne Carrington, Artistic Director of the new Summer Jazz Workshop during the Five-Week Summer Performance Program. Co-directing the ensemble is saxophonist Rick DiMuzio, Assistant Professor of Ear Training. Carrington plans for the ensemble to play standards as well as jazz arrangements by popular songwriters, and hopes to use original student compositions in the performance. A native of Medford, MA, Carrington received a full scholarship to Berklee at age 11, and later became the drummer for The Arsenio Hall Show, spent seven years on tour with Herbie Hancock, and was nominated for a Grammy Award. DiMuzio has performed with Bill Pierce, Danilo Perez, James Williams, and Bob Moses, and recently released his solo debut, titled First Offerings.

Now in its ninth year, ParkARTS began as Mayor Thomas M. Menino's initiative to present a yearlong program of arts and culture related programs and events in Boston's park system. ParkARTS, the Boston Parks and Recreation Department's multi faceted arts program, incorporates the visual, performing, and participatory arts. The 2005 ParkARTS performing arts program presents concerts at Boston neighborhood parks that range from jazz to symphonic music. Over 80 participatory arts programs will be offered including arts and crafts workshops and landscape watercolor painting classes.

The Fenway Civic Association, the area's oldest community organization, works with residents, public agencies, and institutions to enhance urban living for residents and visitors.  Run entirely by volunteers, it sponsors an annual Rose Garden picnic, Back Bay Fens Bird Walk, and other civic events that highlight Olmsted’s historic parks and the natural, cultural, and academic riches of the Fenway.

Mothers Rest, the setting for the concerts, was renovated in 1999 with new swings and playground equipment, sparking renewed interest in this less traveled part of the park.

Berklee College of Music was founded on the revolutionary principle that the best way to prepare students for careers in music was through the study and practice of contemporary music. For over half a century, the college has evolved constantly to reflect the state of the art of music and the music business. With over a dozen performance and nonperformance majors, a diverse and talented student body representing over 70 countries, and a music industry “who's who" of alumni, Berklee is the world's premier learning lab for the music of today — and tomorrow.
