Oriente Lopez - Saturday, June 23, 2007, 8PM-10PM
Oriente Lopez is a world renowned Cuban flautist, pianist, composer, and arranger. In previous years he has collaborated with Silvio Rodriguez, Fito Paez, Chucho Valdez, Arturo Sandoval, Pablo Milanez, and Chico Buarque de Hollanda. Recently he has arranged for and performed with Paul Simon, Paquito D'Rivera, Marc Anthony, Ruben Blades, Regina Carter, Charlie Haden and Gonzalo Rubalcaba among others. His musicality embraces a number of styles such as Classical, and Jazz, as well as Cuban, and Brazilian folklore. He currently plays in the ensembles Bate Bola" which focuses on Brazilian and Cuban music, and Orient Express" which bridges Cuban folklore and contemporary Jazz.
Elio Villafranca - Saturday, June 30, 2007, 8PM-10PM
Elio Villafranca is a Jazz pianist and composer. Elio connects the music of his Cuban heritage as well as other non Cuban folkloric traditions. His syncopated bass lines and intricate jazz harmonies derive from the rich American and Caribbean-African Diaspora. His playing has been compared to the likes of Chucho Valdez, Thelonius Monk, and Herbie Hancock. His complex rhythmic themes develop from his classical training as well as his delving in Cuban folklore and African drumming.
