Steve Wilson Quartet with Nicholas Payton at Jazz Standard/Jan 2006

THE STEVE WILSON QUARTET, WITH SPECIAL GUEST NICHOLAS PAYTON will be performing at JAZZ STANDARD (located at 116 E. 27th Street, NYC) JANUARY 4 - 8, 2006. The quartet features the enormous talents of Bruce Barth (piano), Ed Howard (bass) and Adam Cruz (drums). This will be the first public performance that Mr. Payton will be performing with Mr. Wilson since they recorded together on Passages (Stretch Records), Wilson's sixth recording as a leader, in 1999. He subsequently released Soulful Song on MazzJazz in 2003.



Wilson first met Payton while recording with The Joe Henderson Big Band (Verve) back in 1996 - an auspicious beginning for the two. That recording won a Grammy. They later worked together on Anthony Wonsey's recording on Alfa Jazz, The Exodus. When composing music for Passages, Wilson began to hear Payton's sound and personality in the music. “Nicholas is firmly rooted in the tradition of this music but he also has the ability to extend it. He was perfect for what I wanted. And, fortunately he was available for the date," says Wilson. Payton appears on three Wilson originals: the swinging, percussive 'Turnin' the Corner', deep groove of 'Q-B-Rab' and the beautiful 'Grace'. These tunes will be featured throughout the week in addition to others, original and borrowed, arranged especially for this must see event.
