Stax Music Academy Salutes Motown with Help of Mentor Kirk Whalum and Others on June 27th

The Stax Music Academy, located next door to the Stax Museum of American Soul Music in Memphis at the original site of Stax Records, is paying home to that label's slicker cousin Motown on Saturday, June 27th,7 p.m., at the Buckman Performing Arts Center in Memphis.

This year, the academy's SNAP! Summer Music Camp has brought in a coalition of Memphis music-industry professionals, including Artist in Residence Kirk Whalum, and Malvin Massey, musician and program director for the city's premier jazz station, WUMR 97.1. The students will benefit not only from the expertise of music instructors, but also from those with longstanding careers in writing, composing, conducting, music business, music theory, production, image consulting, and radio.

The Stax Music Academy SNAP! Summer Music Camp Grand Finale Sponsored by ArtsMemphis the culmination of the camp. This year's concert, At the Corner of Soulsville and Hitsville: Stax Celebrates Motown, will feature the music of, among many others, Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross, The Jackson 5,The Temptations, and Martha & the Vandellas.

The show's guest artist is Terron Brooks, who appeared as Simba in The Lion King on Broadway and most recently played Eddie Kendricks in NBC's Emmy Award-winning miniseries The Temptations, a role he will reprise for the Grand Finale. Whalum will not be able to perform due to his touring schedule, but will deliver a special video message. Tickets are $10 in advance, $12 at the door if seats are available.
