Founded in 1967 by artist/teacher/philosopher Maurice Phillips and a group of young artists, including the current Artistic-Executive Director Sajda Musawwir Ladner, UTA is a dynamic artistic, cultural and educational organization with a rich history of providing life enrichment programs to Staten Island's grassroots communities. For over 2 decades UTA has presented the annual Staten Island Jazz event, which has evolved into an all-day festival, to critical acclaim and loyal audiences. Ladner states, “Staten Island JAZZFestival 21 is a direct extension of our mission of ‘quickening the creative spirit in the individual and community and fostering brotherly love’ and it provides a stage upon which our students, community members and world-renowned artists can showcase their talents in a welcoming environment.” To present jazz programming to new and greater audiences including underserved children and families, UTA has created sponsorship opportunities and is partnering with local businesses and community groups to also spur economic growth and tourism in Staten Island.

The day kicks off with workshops taught by esteemed Jazz educators: renowned saxophonist Bluiett; dancer-historian Mickey Davidson; and vocalist Betty Miller. A Romare Bearden (known as the Jazz Artist) collage workshop will be taught by Bearden’s niece, artist Deidre Harris-Kelley. Culminating the morning sessions will be a panel discussion entitled The History and Future of Jazz, moderated by Tony Bellamy (host of Cable TV’s Just Coolin’). UTA will acknowledge various community members with service awards. Award recipients will include Aurelia Curtis, Georgianna DiMauro, Patrick Parnell, Kiawana Rich and Francina Evans. A special lifetime achievement honor will be awarded to saxophonist Maxwell Lucas. Lady Helena Walquer, the New School Jazz Ensemble, Arthur Webb, Jr., David Jones, Bateryz Not Nkluded and a host of other performers will round out the festival.
