Something Positive to Honor Nina Simone, Cheryl Byron, Pearl Primus

On Saturday, June 4th, 8PM at Kumble Theater for the Performing Arts (Long Island University Brooklyn Campus) the dynamic Brooklyn based performing arts company, Something Positive will kickoff Caribbean Heritage month with “Ancestral Chant," a concert that celebrates the lives and artistic legacies of three stalwarts of African American and Caribbean Culture; Rapso music pioneer, Cheryl Byron; the Grandmother of African American dance, Pearl Primus; and Jazz legend, Nina Simone.

A pre-concert fundraising reception, “Cocktails & Conversations" 6PM, at the Long Island University Café will feature guests including: Calypso King of The World, The Mighty Sparrow; Miss Trinidad and Tobago Universe 2003, Faye Alibocus; Acclaimed actress, Hazelle Goodman; Associate Producer of Disney's The Lion King on Broadway, Aubrey Lynch II and Authors of “The Dance Claimed Me—A Biography of Pearl Primus," Peggy and Murray Schwartz. Entertainment will be provided by Recording artist, Kevon Carter, along with music mixed by DJ Keith.

Founded by Cheryl Byron, Something Positive is comprised of more than 40 dancers, singers and musicians. In addition to performing both nationally and internationally, the company has conducted performing arts and costuming workshops for more than 300,000 youth and community members over the last decade. “Cocktails & Conversations" will raise money to help fund Something Positive as they continue to enrich the local community through their performances and public programs.
