Chicago's free summer music festivals will look different — and, in some cases, smaller — next year, though the particulars have yet to be determined.
The city's reduced budget for 2009 means that the Mayor's Office of Special Events, which produces the festivals in Grant Park, tentatively will cut the Jazz and Blues Festivals to three days from four.
In addition, the number of stages at the Celtic Fest and the Viva! Chicago Latin Music Festival likely will be reduced, said Megan McDonald, executive director of the Mayor's Office of Special Events.
Staging also may be changed or reduced at the Taste of Chicago food and music soiree, said McDonald.
But most of the cuts, added McDonald, will be in the stuff that people don't see: our internal operations, contractual services, sound technicians, clean-up crews, security, those types of things. ... I don't want to alarm people."
