On the heels of sold-out performances at Yoshi's San Francisco, the San Jose Jazz Winter Series, and Pacifica Performances, jazz and blues vocalist Pamela Rose is taking her dynamic Wild Women show on the road. Rose has created a rollicking multimedia showcase drawn from her Wild Women of Song CD, and audiences are responding in a big way. “It goes beyond a jazz show," says Bruce Kelley of San Francisco magazine. “It's a swinging honors course in womankind!"
Rose and her band will be featured at the regular Sunday jazz series hosted at J.B.'s Lounge in Sacramento on Sun. 5/2; and at a Grammy Museum concert in Los Angeles on Tues. 7/13. The band heads to London later in May for two appearances--a fund-raiser for Seeds of Peace on Sat. 5/22, followed by a show at the Bulls Head Pub on Wed. 5/26.
Wild Women of Song: Great Gal Composers of the Jazz Era, released last fall on Rose's own Three Handed Records, features the music of women songwriters--particularly those of the Tin Pan Alley and classic blues eras--whose contributions Rose was determined to celebrate. Jazz Times magazine's Harvey Siders described the disc as “heartfelt, female-centric jazz anthropology."
Indeed, Wild Women of Song has not only been a challenging musical endeavor for Rose, but an ongoing cultural history project. She's created a web site (http://www.wildwomenofsong.com) filled with fascinating details about the women represented on the disc (Kay Swift, Bernice Petkere, and Peggy Lee among them). And the show she's developed is a multimedia event that tells the story of these women through music, visuals, and narrative, adding new elements to Rose's always-electrifying performances.
Pamela Rose will be performing at the upcoming California shows with Kris Strom, tenor saxophone; Tammy Hall, piano; Jeff Massanari, guitar; Ruth Davies, bass; and Kent Bryson, drums. The same musicians, minus Massanari, will accompany Rose to London, with Allison Miller taking over the drum chair. “An all-gal hot jazz band!" quips Rose.
“I love singing these songs and doing this show," says Rose, “but even more, am thrilled to see people of all ages discovering something new about jazz, blues, and women!"
