Singer Jacqui Naylor has essentially created a whole new, audience- pleasing musical genre for herself, with a technique she calls “acoustic smashing." This unique singer loves to take the lyrics and melody from a song in one musical realm and fit them to a groove from another. Say what?

Glad you asked! On her brand new album, The Color Five, for example, Naylor sings U2's “I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" to the groove of Miles Davis' “All Blues," and the lyrics to “Summertime" over the music from the Allman Brothers' rock classic, “Whipping Post."

As intriguing as they are, these “smashups" aren't all Naylor has to offer. Far from it. Describing Naylor's CD Live East/West for Jazz Review.com, writer Donna Kimura said, “The recording shows [Naylor] to be a subtle and sophisticated interpreter of jazz standards, which alone would be enough, but Naylor reaches for more as she broadens the idea of jazz. Her repertoire includes a strong set of original tunes that are flavored with contemporary folk and rock influences."

Jacqui Naylor, is based in San Francisco, but has long been enjoying a national and international career that will blossom more fully as music fans read the glowing reviews for The Color Five, her fifth CD, and hear Naylor's music. On The Color Five, her unique talent shines brightly through jazz, pop, and rock while adding touches of gospel, folk, blues, and even a little humor into the mix. The new CD is an eclectic yet seamless recording of five originals, five covers, and five of those trademark “acoustic smashes."

Jacqui Naylor will be performing at Jazz at Pearl's for three nights, joined by Art Khu on piano, Jon Evans on bass and Josh Jones on drums. All three of these players appear on The Color Five, and all three have been touring with Naylor, so audiences will be treated not just to a great singer, but to a terrific, and tight, jazz trio as well. Naylor appears at Pearl's fresh from a far-reaching tour that found her performing at Washington, D.C.'s Blues Alley, New York City's Jazz Standard, Tokyo's Blue Note and at three stops in Spain.

As the Seattle Times said, “This young jazz singer captivates with confidence and playfulness. Her songs get under a listener's skin as only the best jazz vocals can."

Jazz at Pearl's is located at 256 Columbus Avenue near Broadway in the heart of San Francisco's historic North Beach District. Shows begin at 8:00 and 10:00 pm. Doors open at 7:30. For more information/tickets, visit our website or call 415-291 8255.
