SFJAZZ Records today announced the release of the SFJAZZ Collective’s fifth limited- edition (5,000 copies) set, Live 2008: 5th Annual Concert Tour. Available exclusively from SFJAZZ—the leading non-profit jazz organization on the West Coast and the presenter of the 26th Annual San Francisco Jazz Festival (October 3 through November 9, 2008)—the deluxe, numbered 3-CD set is the definitive record of this all-star jazz ensemble’s fifth year. Live 2008 features the Collective’s entire 2008 repertoire, including new arrangements of the work of Wayne Shorter and original compositions by Collective members.

“I consider Wayne Shorter one of my most important musical influences,” says Collective pianist Renee Rosnes. “In 1988, I was a member of his band and that experience changed me forever. Through his music, he taught me about courage, passion, vulnerability, and freedom. Virtually all of Wayne’s compositions are inherently full of these qualities.”

The SFJAZZ Collective honors and interprets the music of jazz masters. Their repertoire has included the music of Ornette Coleman (2004), John Coltrane (2005), Thelonious Monk (2006), Herbie Hancock (2007) and now, Wayne Shorter (2008). The Collective members are also challenged to create original music for the group.

Alto saxophonist Miguel Zenn notes, “As has been the case with all the composers we’ve worked on with the band, the biggest challenge is to try keep the spirit of the original versions of the compositions, while at the same time reflecting the personality of the Collective. I really feel we get better and better at doing this every time we get together.”

The tracks were recorded on the Collective’s 2008 international tour at venues including the 58 North 6th Media Labs, Brooklyn, NY; Orchestra Hall, Chicago Symphony Center, Chicago, IL; Zellerbach Auditorium, CalPerformances, University of California, Berkeley, CA; Grand Theatre Center for Center for the Arts, Tracy, CA; Lobero Theatre, Santa Barbara, CA; Royce Hall, UCLA Live, Los Angeles, CA; and National Hispanic Center, Outpost Productions, Albuquerque, NM.

Launched in 2004 by SFJAZZ, the SFJAZZ Collective is distinguished not just by degree, but diversity of talent: each member is not only a celebrated instrumentalist, but also an outstanding composer and arranger, and most are among today’s most lauded band leaders. The Collective’s current line-up also strikes a perfect balance among founding members, other multi-year veterans, and exciting newcomers. The front line of horns includes two past DownBeat “Artist of the Year” honorees, saxophonist Joe Lovano and trumpeter Dave Douglas, both members since 2007; three-time DownBeat “#1 Rising Star Alto Saxophonist” and founding member Miguel Zenn; and 2008 newcomer trombonist Robin Eubanks, a two-time DownBeat “Trombonist of the Year.” On vibraphone since 2007, Stefon Harris has earned top DownBeat “Rising Star” honors on his instrument and is widely considered the finest vibist of his generation. The incendiary Collective rhythm section boasts founding member and acclaimed Blue Note recording artist Renee Rosnes on piano plus two four-year Collective veterans: bassist Matt Penman, one of the most in- demand sidemen on the international scene; and drummer Eric Harland, famed for his work with Charles Lloyd, McCoy Tyner, and other jazz legends.

Live 2008: 5th Annual Concert Tour is priced at $35 (plus tax and shipping). It is available exclusively online at sfjazz.org and at the SFJAZZ Store (located at 3 Embarcadero Center, Lobby Level, San Francisco, CA 94111; phone 866-920-JAZZ (5299).
