Labor Day festival returns for 20th time

Visitors to downtown Herndon this Labor Day will have an opportunity to exercise their love for music and Virginia wines if they choose to stop by the 20th Annual Labor Day Jazz and Wine Festival. The six-hour event will feature live performances from area musicians and a wine tasting from Virginia wineries.

“It's an opportunity to celebrate the end of the summer," said Ann Marie Heiser, the Town of Herndon Parks and Recreation Department deputy director. For wine connoisseurs, she said, “It's a perfect opportunity to stack up on your wine."

Heiser said the festival has been a main stay in the community for many years. The Herndon Woman's Club is a co-sponsor of the event and President Beverly Davis said the proceeds the club collects at the event would go to support its scholarship programs and contributions to national and international organizations. The club awards two scholarships to Herndon High School each year, $2,000 to a graduating senior and $500 to an outstanding female athlete. It also sends a handicapped child to a week of camp each year and makes charitable contributions to organizations such as K9 Companions, Operation Smile and the Fairfax Women's and Children's Center. The club, in its 70th year of existence, is affiliated with the Labor Day Jazz and Wine Festival for a third year.

“We just encourage everyone to come out and have a good time," said Davis. “Bring chairs and blankets and enjoy jazz and wine tasting." Davis said the festival is popular because it is not “that massive scale," and it attracts between 2,000 and 3,000 visitors each year. “It's more of an upscale affair," she said. She said all of the wine comes from Virginia wineries and this year's festival will feature some newer wineries.

The 20th Annual Labor Day Jazz and Wine Festival will take place on Monday, Sept. 1, from 12 to 6 p.m. at the Herndon Municipal Center Lawn at 777 Lynn Street. The admission is $5 for the concerts or $15 for the concerts and wine tasting. Wine tasters will receive a free wine glass. No pets are allowed at the festival.
