Akoya Afrobeat Ensemble
Unity through Music
Admission is $10
NYC-based Akoya Afrobeat Ensemble was formed in 2002, in the spirit of Nigerian legend Fela Anikulapo Kuti, whose music has become an undeniable social force that continues to resound around the world. With members from nearly every corner of the globe, Akoya salutes the flag of Unity in their music with precise arrangements, tight form and the raging power of authentic Afrobeat grooves. Armed with original compositions and classics from Fela's rich legacy, Akoya offers their music to the people of the world - with the hope of inspiring thought, action, and most importantly, infectious dancing. Be prepared to experience wall-to-wall funky, steamy, spiritually uplifting FUN! The musicians are: Kaleta (vocals, percussion); Joe Miller (percussion, vocals, spiritual guidance); Steve Lustig (rhythm guitar); Ben Abrams (tenor guitar); Felix Chen (bass); Gabriel Hays (keyboards); Carlos Icaza (drums); Duke Mseleku (tenor sax); Jared Tankel (baritone sax); Will Jones (baritone sax); Kelly Pratt (trumpet); Yoshi Takemasa (congas), and Tony Kobayashi (shekere). The band's new single, Wahala" ("Troubles"), is due to be released by late fall; their first CD, Introducing the Akoya Afrobeat Ensemble, will be available at the show. (www.akoyamusic.com)
