New Key Old Keys EP 1 Vol 1

New Keys Old Keys EP 1 Vol 1 has three songs on it that are all more traditional jazz than Ronald’s normal song writing style. Featuring the Hammond, pianos, a small brass section, and some cool jazz guitar, “I wanted to show a more traditional jazz side,” explains Ronald.

Feed Me

In this song, you can hear the groan of the Hammond in the bass line and some cool guitar licks enhanced by a small brass section. The drama builds as you go along until you hear some string accompaniment and a time change. Easy listening at its best!

Latch Key

Ronald has always enjoyed playing some rhythm on his Hammond and this one lets him go! The title is no reference to Latchy Doley who excels in hammering out a rhythm on his B3, but…it did cross my mind. Love his work!

“This fun tune really gets going and has some great piano work that was a blast to play,” explains Ronald.

Enhanced by guitar, piano and assorted sax licks it will move you to “latch on” to the key and groove.

Sermonette

Jazz fans of the Hammond and Jimmy Smith are all too familiar with his fabulous rendition of “The Sermon”.

“After recording this, one of my musician friends said, ‘Hey have you been listening to Jimmy Smith lately?’ Of course, I had. Realizing that I may never reach the heights of a Jimmy Smith Hammond piece, I salute him with my contribution to smooth jazz with “Sermonette.” Says Ronald.

While this piece is a little funky and does get cookin’, it’s a great one to sip a good glass of Port, close your eyes and enjoy! Ronald also gives out a very special thanks to Evan St. Charles for some cool drum advice!

Hotter Than the Sun

A companion piece to “Galaxy 49.3,” this fantasy journey sends you on a smooth jazz journey leaving the earth and orbiting around the sun in a lazy elliptical orbit.

“I’m reminded of space journeys because here in Myrtle Beach on a crisp morning walk as the sun rises, we can witness the launch of rockets from Florida. It is far away, but in the dark of night just before dawn, you can actually see the boosters fall away with a burst of light and the trail of the rocket rising from the south out over the Atlantic Ocean,” mentions Ronald.

“Call me a dreamer, but when I wrote this piece and started the beginnings of the recording process, I was out there orbiting the sun watching the flares coming off the sun and viewing the beauty that I see,” he adds.

As you listen, sit back, and enjoy the journey, “Hotter Than the Sun” builds to a guitar solo with several synth parts and the turn around of the drum parts. In addition, several different pianos, including the Hammond, take you along for the ride and see you safely back to an early morning walk on the beach. Don’t miss this one!

Both the New Keys Old Keys EP 1 Vol 1 and “Hotter Than the Sun” were mastered by brothers Jon Weil (Head Mastering Engineer) and Brandon Weil (GM/Assistant Studio Engineer), in their state-of-the-art studio Fuzzywallz Mastering in Seattle, Washington.
