Magazine's Annual Music Poll Honors Up-and-Coming Pianist in March Issue
Playboy's March Sex and Music" issue has added a new category to its 48-year-old annual music poll. Pianist Jason Moran has been named the magazine's first-ever Jazz Artist of the Year. Playboy's Sex and Music" issue also honors 13 music poll winners including Usher, Velvet Revolver and Kanye West (issue hits newsstands on Friday, February 11). Moran's latest release, Same Mother (Blue Note), is a dazzling work of recombinant barrelhouse blues. Since his emergence on the music scene in the late 90s, Moran has become a leading man in modern jazz. Moran and his group the Bandwagon, with bassist Tarus Mateen and drummer Nasheet Waits, continually challenge the status quo in categories such as improvisation, composition, group concept, repertoire, technique and technological experimentation.
