BOSTON, April 3, 2006 - The Berklee College of Music Rainbow Band formed more than 40 years ago for students who wanted to play big band jazz, and named for the strong presence of international players in the group. Professor Phil Wilson is the group's founder, and still the conductor, and will present the latest line-up in its annual spring concert on Thursday, April 13, at the wheelchair-accessible Berklee Performance Center, 136 Massachusetts Avenue, Boston. Show time is 8:15 p.m. and tickets are $5, $2 for seniors, and available at the Performance Center box office, 617-747-2261.

Twenty-five instrumentalists and one vocalist perform in the Rainbow Band. Some call Israel, Australia, Korea, and Portugal home; others are from Los Angeles, Pittsburgh, and Boston. The concert will include songs from Victor Young, Cole Porter, Dizzy Gillespie, and Wilson.

Under director of Wilson, the Rainbow Band has been a starting point for the careers of some of the best known jazz players of our time: Roy Hargrove, Alan Broadbent, Terri Lynn Carrington, Abe Laborial, Sr., and John Scofield.

Berklee College of Music was founded on the revolutionary principal that the best way to prepare students for careers in music was through the study and practice of contemporary music. For over half a century, the college has evolved constantly to reflect the state of the art of music and the music business. With over a dozen performance and nonperformance majors, a diverse and talented student body representing over 70 countries, and a music industry “who's who" of alumni, Berklee is the world's premier learning lab for the music of today -- and tomorrow.
