El Paso Times columnist Ruth Taber, a native New Yorker, was invited by Paul Rosenblum, the managing director of the Caramoor International Music Festival, to write an article for this year's festival program. In the following column, she shares with El Pasoans what the festival has to offer.
Ninety acres of gardens, a Venetian theater and a Spanish courtyard in the center of the late Lucie and Walter Rosen's Mediterranean villa will again serve as the setting for the annual Caramoor International Music Festival. This 63rd year of magnificent summer concerts begins June 21 and runs through Aug. 3 at the Caramoor estate in Katonah, N.Y., 45 miles from midtown Manhattan.
Performances include opera, chamber music, jazz, cabaret and Sonidos Latinos -- Caramoor's Latin American music initiative, which features both new and old Latin American music in concert settings.
Opera lovers will be treated to a new version of Rossini's delightful Barber of Seville." Performed with Rossini's original, lighter and more sparkling orchestration, it will also feature the floral vocal style, derived from documents written when Rossini was alive. The Barber" performances will be July 12 and July 18, semi-staged and sung in Italian with English supertitles.
