Pianist and percussionist Omar Sosa will bring his group, which plays a combination of Afro-Caribbean rhythms, Latin dance grooves, North African trance music and European folk, to Purdue at 8 p.m. Oct. 18 for a concert at Stewart Center's Loeb Playhouse.

The performance by the Omar Sosa Afreecanos Quartet is presented by Purdue Convocations as part of its Jazz Set series. Sosa will talk about his career and musical influences during a pre-show discussion at 7 p.m. Oct. 18 in Stewart Center, Room 318.

Touring in support of his latest album, “Afreecanos, “ Sosa joins up with musicians from Cuba, Mozambique and Senegal to celebrate the legacy of African and Latin music in jazz and to showcase the interpretations that move it all forward into a contemporary jazz expression, said Abby Eddy, director of marketing for Purdue Convocations.

Since 1997, Sosa has released 15 recordings on the Oakland-based Ota Records label, including 2002's Grammy-nominated “Sentir." Other accomplishments include a 2003 lifetime achievement award from the Smithsonian Institution for his contributions to the development of Latin music in the United States.
