In celebration of the fifth anniversary of the popular Jazz Jam Series at Laguardia Performing Arts Center, LaGuardia Community College. Long Island City, internationally aqcclaimed saxophonist, flutist, and composer James Spaulding will play at the January 24th session - Salute to Woodwind Players.

Since the center launched the Jazz Jam Series in 1999, it has gained a reputation as an ideal venue to play and to listen to improvisational jazz, a perfect setting for nurturing and encouraging aspiring musicians and, at the same time, for educating and exposing novices to the world of jazz. It is truly an extraordinary and passionate exchange that occurs between musicians and audiences at the Jazz Jam sessions.

“Jazz Jam helps Queens’rich legacy of jazz to continue as well as entertain and expose audiences to America’s indigenous music, jazz,” said Lucy Holland, the series’ associate producer. “The borough prides itself on being the home of such jazz legends as Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Count Basie, Cannonball Adderly, Dizzy Gillespie, and Roy Eldridge.”

Mr. Spaulding is a member of that group of highly respected contemporary musicians. This modernist, with solid roots in classical jazz, was a member of the Freddie Hubbard Quintet, the David Murray Octet & Big Band, and the World Saxophone Quartet.

He played on a number of classic albums, such as Louis Armstrong’s last recording date, “Louis Armstrong & Friends,” and on Max Roach’s “Drums Unlimited.” He also recorded with Wayne Shorter, Bobby Hutcherson, and Sun Ra. Mr. Spaulding has recorded six CDs. His original music, a suite entitled, “A Song of Courage,” was performed with full orchestra and choir at Rutger’s University from funds awarded him by the National Endowment for the Arts.
