Full reviews of recent jazz concerts

BILLY BANG SEXTET (Sunday) As a violinist and composer, Mr. Bang favors astringency and formal tension, qualities that come naturally to the musicians in this sextet. For an outdoor concert organized by Jazz at Lincoln Center at the Museum of Modern Art, however, Mr. Bang and his ensemble will perform the premiere of a reflective composition called “Prayer for Peace"; it is part of Summergarden 2008: New Music for New York. At 8 p.m., Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Sculpture Garden at the Museum of Modern Art, (212) 708-9400, moma.org; free, with gates opening at 7 p.m. (Nate Chinen)

SAMUEL BLASER QUARTET (Wednesday) Samuel Blaser, a young trombonist with pronounced experimental tendencies, celebrates the release of an album called “7th Heaven" (Between the Lines) with a highly promising rhythm section: the guitarist Todd Neufeld, the bassist Thomas Morgan and the drummer Tyshawn Sorey. At 8:30 p.m., Cornelia Street Caf, 29 Cornelia Street, West Village, (212) 989-9319, corneliastreetcafe.com; cover, $10, with a one-drink minimum. (Chinen)

JOANNE BRACKEEN'S BREATH OF BRAZIL (Monday) “Breath of Brazil" was an aptly titled album by the pianist JoAnne Brackeen, featuring Eddie Gomez on bass; it was issued on Concord back in 1991. Revisiting the same lightly breezy concept and repertory here, Ms. Brackeen and Mr. Gomez work alongside the percussionist Z Mauricio and the drummer Adam Cruz. At 7:30 and 9:30 p.m., Jazz Standard, 116 East 27th Street, Manhattan, (212) 576-2232, jazzstandard.net; cover, $25. (Chinen)

DON BYRON PLAYS JUNIOR WALKER (Thursday) The clarinetist Don Byron has lately been playing more tenor saxophone, a development that motivated “Do the Boomerang" (Blue Note), his tribute to the Motown saxophonist and singer Junior Walker. Here he welcomes most of the players from the album, including the vocalist Dean Bowman, the guitarist David Gilmore, the keyboardist George Colligan and the bassist Brad Jones. (Through July 20.) At 7:30 and 9:30 p.m., Jazz Standard, 116 East 27th Street, Manhattan, (212) 576-2232, jazzstandard.net; cover, $25. (Chinen)
