On Longing To Meet You, The Brilliant And Versatile Guitarist Jake Hertzog Leads An Adventurous Jazz Quartet On A Set Of His Original Music Musically portraying the ups and downs of IVF, Longing To Meet You is dedicated to Hertzog’s daughter.
In his career guitarist Jake Hertzog has performed and composed music for jazz, rock, folk and classical music styles in addition to being the musical director for pop stars. A sonic explorer, Hertzog put together his recent quartet for his new project, utilizing three superb musicians (altoist Matt Woroshyl, bassist Perrin Grace, and drummer Joe Peri) that he knew from their mutual time attending the Manhattan School in New York.
Longing To Meet You is inspired by Hertzog’s experiences with IVF. His nine originals are dedicated to the joyful result, the birth of his daughter.
The suite, which contains such pieces as “Longing To Meet You” (during which Woroshyl’s alto playing is particularly romantic and full of longing), the atmospheric and often-heated “A Dream Fades Slowly,” a lyrical “The Attempt,” and the gloomy and mysterious “A Room With No Doors,” features the guitarist-leader taking unpredictable and emotional solos. “Loss” is melancholy and purposely a bit directionless, as if Hertzog were thinking aloud at the guitar. An energetic and wailing “The Last Time” is an effective contrast which is followed by the brief “Interlude,” the hopeful “The Whisper You,” and the happy and celebratory closer “Arrival.”
Dr. Jake Hertzog has certainly had a wide ranging career as a guitarist, composer and educator. He has degrees from Berklee College Of Music, the Manhattan School Of Music and the University Of Arkansas. and has performed and recorded with such artists as Randy Brecker, Ivan Neville, Blondie Chaplin, Anton Fig, Barry Altschul, Dave Liebman, and Ingrid Jensen among many others. Hertzog has led a trio with bassist Harvie S and drummer Victor Jones that recorded five albums. His 2018 release Stringscapes: A Portrait of the World in Nylon and Steel teamed his guitar with classical guitarist Yishai Fisher. He also recorded his classical suite for solo electric guitar (Well Lit Shadow), collaborated with media artist Adam Hogan (A turn of events), led the rock group The Young Presidents (2009–16), worked as the musical director for many different pop stars, been the artist-in-residence and guest clinician in colleges and conservatories in the U.S., Europe, Latin America and India, contributed over 30 articles to Guitar Player magazine, works as Assistant Professor of Guitar at the University of Arkansas, and written two guitar instructional books, Guitar SFX (Hal Leonard), and Guitar University (Royal Press). It has been a busy and productive career and there is much more scheduled in the future.
Longing To Meet You is the first in a trio of recordings by Hertzog that will also include a concerto for jazz guitar and jazz philharmonic (big band and strings), and a project of Ozark folk music. It features Jake Hertzog as his most adventurous during a heartfelt tribute to his daughter and his experience of utilizing IVF.
