Classic '80s band is back with shimmering new albumperfect for summertime
PORTLAND, ORPortland Oregon's NU SHOOZ returns with PANDORA'S BOX, a CD recorded in their latest incarnation as the NU SHOOZ Orchestra. The album, the band's first full-length release in more than 20 years, will be available beginning Aug. 1 at NU SHOOZ Music (http://store.nushoozmusic.com/) or iTunes.
PANDORA'S BOX is the latest stop in the continuing journey of bandleaders Valerie Day and John Smith. Lyrical and dreamlike, playful and sublime, PANDORA'S BOX takes the iconic '80s band into strange new worlds filled with spy music, Tarzan movies, Debussy and their signature brand of deadpan funk. A 10-member Orchestra Gil Evans would have loved, the band includes strings, horns and vibes that bring Smith's swirling, intricate arrangements to life. The NU SHOOZ Orchestra is our experimental music laboratory," Day says, and John the mad scientist of beats and chords."
This latest addition to the NU SHOOZ sonic landscape features nine new songs, along with remakes of three SHOOZ classics from the band's 1986 Gold Record Poolside:" an all-grown-up funky version of the Billboard Top 40 hit Point of No Return," a laid back Driftin'" and a jazzy 20th-anniversary version of the band's #3 Billboard hit I Can't Wait."
The disc also features guest appearances by favorite Portland OR musicians including bluesman Curtis Salgado, Ross Seligman (Echo Helstrom), China Forbes (Pink Martini), Shannon Day, and jazz lions Dave Captein and Gary Hobbs. Gregg Williams stepped in as producer (Sheryl Crow, Emmy Lou Harris, the Dandy Warhols, Blitzen Trapper).
The latest '80s music resurgence has propelled NU SHOOZ back into the spotlight. I Can't Wait" has recently surfaced in the feature film Hot Tub Time Machine" and a Powerade commercial that ran throughout the 2010 Winter Olympic games.
NU SHOOZ was nominated for a Best New Artist" Grammy award in 1987. I Can't Wait" continues to be played on radio stations around the globe every 11 minutes.
