On Spark, saxophonist, clarinetist, and composer Aaron Irwinpresents a meaningful statement by his long running trio, featuring guitarist Mike Baggetta and drummer Bill Campbell. Released on Adhyâropa Records, the album draws from blues and folk rooted language while resisting the pull of genre, offering music that feels grounded, melodic, and quietly expansive.
Rather than working within traditional blues or folk forms, Spark absorbs their emotional gravity and song-centered logic, allowing those influences to surface through phrasing, texture, and structure. The result is music that feels both familiar and newly shaped, guided by melody and structure while leaving space for improvisation to unfold organically.
The trio’s chemistry is central to the album’s voice. Baggetta and Campbell have worked with Irwin for many years, and their shared history is audible in the ease of interaction and trust embedded in the music. Grooves emerge and recede naturally, tempos breathe, and improvisation serves the song rather than drawing attention to itself.

Spark follows Irwin’s previous release (after) for the trio, also released on Adhyâropa Records, which explored music inspired by poetry.According to Jazzwise, it was “thoughtful and full of surprises.”While that project leaned toward introspection and abstraction, Spark turns toward warmth, groove, and directness, expanding the collective sound while remaining personal.

Aaron Irwin is a Brooklyn based saxophonist, multi woodwind instrumentalist, and composer whose work has been praised for its lyricism and emotional clarity. Known as a “lyrical alto saxophonist and a compelling original composer, as well as a canny bandleader" (The New Yorker), Irwin is a sought-after commodity in the New York jazz scene. In addition to leading his own projects, he has performed with ensembles including Darcy James Argue’s Secret Society and Jamie Baum’s Septet+.
