NEXT GENERATION OF JAZZ STARS TO PERFORM AT JAZZ FEST
(Columbus, OH) – The tantalizing aroma of ribs on the grill mixed with red-hot jazz makes a combination that is undeniably delicious for the 26th annual Columbus Jazz & Rib Fest. Join Columbus Recreation and Parks Department along the downtown riverfront on Friday July 22 from 11:00 a.m. to 11:30 p.m., Saturday July 23 from 11:00 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. and Sunday, July 24 from 11:00 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Admission is free.
Saturday, July 23, features a showcase of young local talent with performances by the award-winning Ft. Hayes Jazz All-Stars as well as the winner and runner-up in the Hank Marr Scholarship competition. This is an excellent opportunity to hear the next generation of great jazz players.
The Ft. Hayes Jazz All Stars opens Saturday’s festivities with a performance on Bicentennial Park stage at noon. “This group of young players represent the best in young, local jazz talent,” says director Jeff McCargish of the Ft. Hayes High School group. This spring at the 2005 OSU Jazz Fest, members were named Best Drummer and Best Soloist, won individual scholarships and performed in ensembles that received “Excellent” and “Superior” ratings. The ten-piece group will perform a variety of styles, old and new. Ensemble members include James Filmore on saxophone, Joe Cooper on flute and vocals, Eric Davis on trumpet, Kenny Banks, Jeremy Larry and Chris Grays on keyboards, Chris Gatton on guitar and vocals, Cody Aledia on bass and Garren Smith and Daniel Zwelling on drums.
On Saturday evening, the winner and runner-up from the Hank Marr Scholarship competition will perform at Riverfront Amphitheater at 6:00 p.m. with the Tom Carroll Trio and Mary McClendon. Steve Renko from Euclid, Ohio, winner of the competition will light up the stage with his percussion prowess. At fifteen years old, this drumming prodigy has already performed at the Grammy Awards in Hollywood. In addition, runner-up Aaron Kleinstub from Chagrin Falls, Ohio will show off his mastery of the trumpet.
