NEWS ON ALAN FERBER:
Just try to keep track of one of the busiest players on the New York scene. In addition to leading his own groups, Ferber is seemingly appearing all over town, and all over the globe, with the likes of Anthony Wilson, Dan Pratt, John Hollenbeck, Todd Sickafoose, Josh Irving, Jeff Newell, Chris Jentsch, in addition to subbing on Broadway in many of the City's top shows.
His new recording The Compass" carries with it the overriding idea to function as a scene within the scene, shedding light on the perpetual exchange of ideas taking place amongst a dynamic community of musicians. The critics apparently approve: Don Heckman of The Los Angeles Times proclaimed that . . . Ferber still hasn't received the attention he deserves as one of his instrument's most adventurous exponents. Ferber's Nonet, heard to advantage on his forthcoming CD, The Compass," offers an intriguing step forward for middle-sized jazz ensembles, blending crisply scored passages with fiery collective improvising." And in LA City Beat Kirk Silsbee said, Ferber's thoughtful charts and full voicings approximate a big band with minimal numbers. As a writer, he gives his soloists maximum space and creates canny frameworks for them."
NEWS ON BASSIST AVISHAI COHEN:
The globe trotting bassist/composer is currently in the midst of the 2nd leg of his U.S. tour in support of the phenomenal new CD/DVD As Is . . . Live at The Blue Note" (Half Note Records) Those lucky enough to catch the new Avishai Cohen trio have been treated to the beauty and power naturally inherent in 20 year old piano virtuoso Shai Maestro's playing. Judging from the reviews the guys have been knocking them dead everywhere they hit: Shai Maestro is a phenomenon that deserves his own surname and uses his marvellous technique to create streams of emotion." - Jazz Zaragoza Spain 2006.

Look for new releases from me from Jason Lindner (Live at The Jazz Gallery, double live CD on Anzic Records) and pianist/composer Ryan Cohan from Chicago (titled One Sky).
