How many awards show take place during summer months? Very few! Most are crammed somewhere between mid - February to mid April. After considerable reflection and a desire to put the frigid months behind we’ve decided the fourth edition of the National Jazz Awards Canada should occur during the arrival of the summer’s solstice and as a preamble to the ever-successful TD Canada Trust Downtown Jazz Festival.
We asked those who attended the grand gala at the Winter Garden Theater last year if there we’re any changes they’d like to see. It was pretty unanimous - everyone wants to party and socialize much like the second season at the Palais Royale.
With that in mind we’ve booked June 21, 2005 at the Phoenix Theatre for a night of celebration, revelry and great music. 2004 recipient of the NJAC Guitarist of the Year Award – Jake Langley has consented to fronting the all-star house band. There will be plenty of surprises, café style seating, great southern style dinner, bar hang and much more.
One significant moment of this year’s event is the celebration tribute to guitar legend Dominic Triano. Dominic’s legacy as a performer and producer of hundreds of television shows the past couple decades is renown. Vocalist Roy Kenner along bassist Parkash John, Whitey Glan – original members of Triano’s ‘James Gang’ will be on hand with guitarist Bernie LaBarge, Rik Emmett and Jeff Healy joining in for an all- star jam. Dominic’s brother Frank will speak in behalf of the family.
As has been the case since inception FACTOR has provided substantial funding. Their commitment makes staging an event of this magnitude possible. The Galaxie Radio Network is back again with financial support – a portion set aside for the CBC Galaxie Rising Star Award. Ken Page Memorial Trust will also award Lifetime Achievement.
One hundred fifty nomination ballots were sent coast to coast to jazz radio broadcasters, festival organizers, educators etc. From their selections only the top five vote getters qualify. In several cases there are ties within the system. As an example 1, 2, 3, 4 spots may be uncontested but the fifth spot may have two, three or four people with the same amount of votes. The only fair thing to do is be inclusive.
