Music historian Piero Scaruffi has self-published a History of Jazz Music that mostly covers contemporary musicians, the result of three decades of research. The author's background in rock music, classical music and avant-garde music gives it a unique flavor, crossing borders and questioning stereotypes. It is also unique in that it emphasizes composition and arrangement. Following his notorious A History of Rock Music and the shorter History of Popular Music, this is the third book in a bold project to synthesize the music of the 20th century. The whole text is available for free on Scaruffi's website.
