MJF Celebrates 40 Years of MJF's Next Generation Jazz Festival in 2011


Monterey, CA— The Monterey Jazz Festival, a leader in jazz education since 1958, is proud to announce that MJF Jazz Education Director Dr. Rob Klevan, Next Generation Jazz Orchestra Director Paul Contos and MJF Board Member Al Adolph will appear on Santa Cruz's KSCO 1080 AM, on the “Raising the Standards" radio show, hosted by Michael Jacobi on Saturday, November 20 starting at 3 p.m. “Raising the Standards" can be heard live online at http://www.ksco.com.

Dr. Klevan, Mr. Contos and Mr. Adolph will highlight the Monterey Jazz Festival's Education Programs, including a preview of the upcoming 2011 Next Generation Jazz Festival (April 1ש, 2011); the Festival's Next Generation Jazz Orchestra and its national and international tours, and more.

Now in its seventh successful year in downtown Monterey, the Next Generation Jazz Festival evolved from MJF's “California High School Jazz Competition" which began in 1971 and was presented at the Monterey County Fairgrounds for thirty-five years. Renamed in 2004 to the Next Generation Jazz Festival, and celebrating its forty-year anniversary in 2011, the weekend salute to the future of jazz has expanded to include middle school, conglomerate bands, and college level musicians and vocalists. The top big bands, combos, and vocal ensembles will win cash awards and be invited to perform at the 54th Annual Monterey Jazz Festival, September 16㬎, 2011.
