InDepth Jazz Clinics and Concerts opens its 2014 season by presenting music from the formidable album Miles Smiles, recorded by iconic trumpeter Miles Davis in 1967. The recording features fabulous compositions and group interplay and had a far-reaching effect on the jazz idiom.

On January 24, 2014 all six tunes from the album will be performed in concert in popular Baltimore listening room, An die Musik Live.

Featured performers are top-call musicians with impeccable technique, deep pockets of jazz wisdom, and the heart and soul to pay proper tribute to this legendary album.

The core band is Jeff Antoniuk & the Jazz Update. Doug Morrissey of MusikReviews.com calls them “a quartet to be reckoned with,” and scores of critics echo that praise. Acclaimed trumpeter John D'Earth joins them as a guest artist for concert and clinic the next day.

Artistic director and saxophonist JEFF ANTONIUK is an award-winning composer and artist who has toured widely and received grants from both the Canada Council and National Endowment for the Arts (NEA). He holds a master’s degree in jazz performance and West African ethnomusicology from University of North Texas.

Protean trumpeter John D'Earth is a special guest. D’earth has worked with jazz greats from Miles Davis to Pat Metheny, pop/rock acts from Dave Matthews, to Bruce Hornsby, and chamber musicians such as Kronos String Quartet and The Kandinsky Trio. He is director of jazz performance at the University of Virginia, where he encourages students to push the boundaries of composition and improvisation.

Bassist Tom Baldwin has backed modern jazz greats such as James Moody and George Garzone and teaches at the University of Maryland. Brilliant Baltimore-bred pianist Wade Beach toured widely with the Airmen of Note and teaches at George Mason University. Drummer Tony Martucci has played and recorded with giants from almost every period of jazz, including Mose Allison, Joe Henderson, and Sonny Stitt. He is also an adjunct faculty member at Virginia Commonwealth University.

An die Musik Live is located on the upper level of 409 North Charles Street, Baltimore, MD 21201. Shows are at 8:00 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. Admission is $15 adults, $10 seniors and students.

On Saturday, January 25, the same superb team will present a jazz workshop to serve gifted amateurs and semi-pro musicians. Adult students (aged 16 and up) get lots of playing time in small combos grouped by ability level. The clinic takes place from 1pm to 5:30pm at St. Mark Presbyterian Church in Rockville.
