Top jazz musician awarded university accolade 21 October 2004 / University of Plymouth Press Release

Internationally-renowned jazz musician Mike Westbrook OBE will have his considerable achievements recognised when he collects an honorary degree at the University of Plymouth's Faculty of Arts Awards Ceremony next week.

Devon-born Mike formed his first band in 1958 while studying painting at Plymouth Art School before moving to London to pursue his interest in jazz. He will be awarded the Honorary Doctorate of Music at an awards ceremony to be held at Exeter Cathedral from 2.30 pm on Thursday 28 October.

Based in London since the 1960's, Mike has led and composed for a succession of big bands and small groups, recorded over 40 albums and toured extensively throughout Europe and internationally.
