Midem's Reaching for the Rogaine...

Midem is definitely thinning on top, though some Rogaine is coming in the form of tech-related plays. According to more information circulating Wednesday, a number of fresh, tech-focused companies are jumping aboard and shifting the mix, though the bigger picture is problematic.

Still, this was by no means an empty event, though 'Midem lifers' like to tell stories of stuffed boondoggles in the good old days. This time around, the Carlton was packed night after night, but the Martinez and Majestic were a bit hit-and-miss, depending on the evening. “It's a lot lower," a night-shifter at the Martinez told me.

Numbers please? Sources were pegging actual attendance in the 5-6,000 range, based either on conversations with organizers or some number-crunching of their own. Actually, the official number is 6,850, down 4.9 percent from 2010, according to Midem headquarters.

On the details, we're not sure if the organizers will also be offering a strata breakdown. Either way, the obvious drain is coming from traditional places, and Midem—like almost every other sector of this business—is now faced with a difficult adaptation ahead. And, maybe a reinvention or three.
