New CD Coming From Michael Wolff

Victor Jones, Chip Jackson, Rich Goods, Steve Wilson and Ian Young All Set to Appear on Fall '08 Album

Acclaimed jazz pianist Michael Wolff headed into Sear Sound in New York City in May, to begin sessions for his as-yet-untitled upcoming CD release. The new album will feature an eclectic combination of songs, ranging from BB King's 'Nobody Loves Me But My Mama' to Billie Holiday's 'Don't Explain', to 'If I Were A Bell' from “Guys And Dolls", to a combination of standards and original tracks. Wolff describes the overall feel of the music as 'Blues-tinged' - reflecting his years growing up in the South, and his love of the Blues aesthetic.

The CD will feature Wolff's trio: Rich Goods and Chip Jackson (both of whom share the bass chair,) and drummer Victor Jones. Special Guests will include Steve Wilson on alto sax, and Ian Young on tenor sax.

All additional details - including final track listing, title, etc - will be announced in the weeks ahead. U.S. Tour dates are planned as well.

For now, Wolff's enthusiasm about the new CD, and the great musicians he's working with, is palpable: “I'm excited to play, again, with Victor Jones. We've played together for many years, and to me, he's one of the greatest jazz drummers of all time.

I'm really happy to have Chip Jackson on this record -- I love his playing! He's played bass with so many great artists, including Dr. Billy Taylor (with whom I've had the great pleasure of playing duo piano) and Elvin Jones. Chip and I played together when I first moved to New York, and I'm thrilled to have re-connected with him.

Rich Goods has been on the road with me in my trio for a little more than a year now. He's a soulful bass player with a full, round tone and a wonderful rhythmic feel.

I'm especially excited to have saxophonist Steve Wilson on this album for a few tunes. He's a consummate musician, and he has a wonderful combination of a lovely and exciting tone. His interpretations are always free and moving.

It's always fun to play with a fresh, new, young player - they're always so open and just so excited to play. That's why I've invited the very talented Ian Young to play tenor on a few tunes.

I'm happy to be playing some of my own compositions, as well as a few tried and true songs like 'If I Were a Bell' (from “Guys and Dolls") and 'Don't Explain' - a great Billie Holiday song. I'm just so happy to be able to record this music and tour with such fabulous musicians!"

Wolff is also pleased to announce the re-launch of his website, , via JazzCorner, on May 1st. JazzCorner is the internet's largest portal for the official websites of hundreds of jazz musicians and organizations. Lois Gilbert, Managing Director of JazzCorner, commented: “I'm delighted to welcome Michael Wolff to the JazzCorner family. Michael is an expansive and progressive musician of the highest caliber, and his website reflects his vision."

Michael Wolff continues to garner raves for his CD releases. JAZZIZ MAGAZINE has praised him as “a musical chameleon"; ALL ABOUT JAZZ raved: “Wolff has some of the most expansive vision of anyone working in jazz today"; THE VILLAGE VOICE described his recent instrumental album as “a strong reminder of just how playful a jazz trio can be..."; DOWNBEAT said: “Wolff and his colleagues play with a breezy synchronicity," and JAZZTIMES noted “The band's goal was to have fun -- All of us do."
