MIA 2011—Festival of Improvised Music of Atouguia da Baleia—Portugal, held last week-end of May in the Auditorium of the Philharmonic Society, having been deemed a success by the Organization and by the vast majority of those who participated and attended this second edition of an event that has gained international status. The 44 musicians who passed through that stage this year, these included 11 foreigners from France, Italy, Germany and England here who might know each other and exchange experiences among themselves.

The balance is clearly positive, and there were significant improvements on the first edition. It's not every day you can watch a festival of this nature and with artists as important as this current aesthetic Carlos Zingaro, Sebastien Branche, Ernesto Rodrigues, Paulo Curado, Carola Ortiz or Gianna Toni, just to name a few.

Concerts were conducted by random drawing and presented projects as ZNGR Electro-Acoustic Ensemble, Relentless, and PREC Kalendar among others. There was a discussion about improvisation moderated by critic and essayist Rui Eduardo Paes and a workshop directed by the German pedagogue Reiner Hess. There was also a moment of apotheosis with the final being MIA Ensemble masterfully directed by maestro Vasco Pearce de Azevedo.

The Organization of the MIA 2011, chaired by local musicians Fernando Simões and Paulo Chagas, sent the sincere thanks to all those who contributed to this fantastic event. The Organization also promises to engage in continuing this project and is already starting to gather the necessary support.
