A WARM Saturday afternoon - by 2008 standards anyway - and supping a pint while listening to a mellow jazz band that just about sums up the best thing about the Marlborough Jazz festival.
Founder Dan Dawson has passed away but his old band kept his spirit alive on Saturday enthralling an audience that packed into every odd corner of one of Marlborough's oldest coaching inns, The Lamb Inn.
It was easy-listening jazz as its best from this six-piece band. Jazz can be discordant but not the Stompers whose mellow sound wooed an appreciative audience. The more observant in their audience noticed that the six musicians needed no music to play from and just syncopated as only the most experienced and best players can.
Seats were at a premium so many of those who enjoyed this band had to stand; probably an advantage because those seated probably found themselves lulled to sleep by this small but perfectly attuned group.
