About Mario Pavone Bassist/composer Mario Pavone has collaborated with both legendary innovators and today's most respected young musicians to consistently define the cutting edge of jazz for the past 40 years. Critics have called his music “exceptional" (AllAboutJazz.com), “full of smart, angular swagger" (Signal to Noise), and “masterful examples of group interplay" (DownBeat), with the New York Times' Ben Ratliff noting, “His work has never been less than compelling." After many years as a sideman with the likes of Paul Bley, Anthony Braxton, Thomas Chapin and Bill Dixon, Pavone has crafted a signature sound on 16 recordings as a leader, with a long list of prominent sidemen including Steven Bernstein, Gerald Cleaver, Dave Douglas, Peter Madsen, Tony Malaby, Joshua Redman, George Schuller, Michael Sarin, Craig Taborn, and Matt Wilson among many others. His latest release is 2004's Boom (Playscape Recordings), which was named to best-of-the-year lists in Coda and AllAboutJazz-New York.
