Smile" from First Flight
(Summit 481)
To update a well-known classic while still maintaining the elements that make it great has always been any arranger's challenge, yet many fall short of their goal. Pete makes it seem easy with his beautiful reworking of the Charlie Chaplin chestnut, Smile."
It's dedicated to the memory of my late father, Joseph McGuinness, who would spin Nat Cole LPs as a Connecticut DJ in the mid '50s," Pete recalls fondly. The tune was closely associated with Nat, and the sentiment was very heartfelt at the time I wrote this arrangement, shortly after my father passed in 2005."
The recording features McGuinness leading a big band showcasing his exceptional writing, playing and singing talents - a culmination of over 20 years of experiences within the dynamic jazz atmosphere of New York City.
