The Makanda Project is an effort by a group of Boston musicians to bring to light some incredible music that otherwise would have remained unheard. When the great multi-instrumentalist and educator Makanda Ken McIntyre passed in 2001, he left behind 400 compositions that had not been recorded or, in most cases, performed in public. McIntyre had unique talents and concepts as a composer, and this body of work is full of pieces that represent his compositional talent at its best.
Roxbury Action Program is a non-profit organization that works in the areas of housing and community development in Boston's African American communuty. This concert marks the beginning of a new cultural initiative. McIntyre was born and raised in Roxbury, and the organization's intent, with this and future concerts, is to both make creative jazz a greater part of the community cultural fabric, and to call attention to the achievements of a Roxbury native son.
The band consists of Kurtis Rivers - alto saxophone and clarinet; Salim Washington - tenor saxophone, flute and oboe; Sean Berry - tenor saxophone, flute and clarinet; Charlie Kohlhase - baritone saxophone; Josiah Woodson - trumpet and flute; Bill Lowe - trombone; John Kordalewski - piano and arrangements; John Lockwood - bass; and Yoron Israel - drums.
