Celebrates Cafe Bohemia
(Spring/Summer 2006) The Tribeca Performing Arts Center at BMCC proudly announces the 2006 Lost Jazz Shrines series. This year, the annual celebration will focus on Cafe Bohemia, bringing the legendary venue temporarily back into the consciousness of the jazz world with a thorough remembrance and examination. Lost Jazz Shrines' celebration of Cafe Bohemia will encompass three magnificent concerts on Fridays, May 12, May 26 and June 9, and will feature some of the world's finest jazz musicians including Louis Hayes, Dr. Lonnie Smith with Reuben Wilson, Sean Jones, Antonio Hart, Don Braden, Robin Eubanks and special guest, NEA Jazz Master Ron Carter. In addition, the first two concerts will be proceeded by a FREE admission Humanities Program with live interviews with celebrated figures in jazz. Lost Jazz Shrines is an annual concert series that celebrates some of the more significant and historic defunct jazz venues in downtown Manhattan. See below for complete program information.
Located in Greenwich Village at 15 Barrow Street, Cafe Bohemia featured such great jazz stars of the 1950's as Miles Davis, John Coltrane, the Adderley Brothers, Art Blakey, Randy Weston and Charles Mingus. A number of classic jazz albums were recorded live at the club, such as Art Blakey's At the Cafe Bohemia, among many others. Our concerts will honor and illuminate the music of Julian “Cannonball" Adderley, Jimmy Smith and Oscar Pettiford. Concerts will be held every other Friday with a Humanities Program and Photo Exhibition.

This concert features Louis Hayes' Cannonball Adderley Legacy Band, celebrating the music of the great Julian “Cannonball" Adderley. In 1959, the legendary Louis Hayes joined the vibrant Cannonball Adderley Quintet, an event the drummer describes as “one of the best experiences of my life, both personally and musically." The irrepressible Hayes unarguably created the buoyant, yet driving foundation for Adderley's quintet at a period when the group was making jazz history. Hayes continued to make jazz history, notably with pianist Oscar Peterson and bassist Ray Brown - in one of the world's most revered trios, and also with Freddie Hubbard, McCoy Tyner, Horace Silver, Kenny Barron, Junior Cook and Woody Shaw. Over the last 20 years, this internationally acclaimed drummer has dedicated himself to, what he describes as, “the unfinished business" of taking the music into yet unexplored dimensions. Hayes' current mission is recreating the spirit of the great Cannonball Adderley in the exciting project featuring the great alto saxophonist Vincent Herring in the “Adderley" role.

The second concert in the series features Hammond B-3 Organ master Dr. Lonnie Smith with special guest organist Reuben Wilson, honoring the music of NEA Jazz Master Jimmy Smith. Dr. Lonnie Smith is internationally known as one of the premier jazz keyboardists in the history of the idiom. A dominant talent and pace-setting proponent of the Hammond B3 Organ and widely recognized and gifted pianist, Lonnie has been at the forefront of the jazz scene since 1969 when he was named Top Organist by Downbeat Magazine. Most recently, Dr. Smith has been awarded the Organ Keyboardist of the Year award in 2003, 2004 and 2005 by the Jazz Journalist Association. As a young man in the 1950's, Smith sang in several groups including the Teen Kings. Music store owner Art Kubera gave Smith his first Hammond B3 organ. From his early years with George Benson to present day performances and recordings, Lonnie has acquired critical acclaim for his brilliant work in the jazz world.
After recording several albums with George Benson, Lonnie became a solo recording artist and developed a career that has produced over 30 albums under his own name. Several legendary jazz artists have joined Dr. Lonnie Smith on his albums, including Lee Morgan, David “Fathead" Newman, King Curtis, Blue Mitchell, and Joe Lovano among others. Lonnie has also performed around the globe with Dizzy Gillespie, Grover Washington, Jr., Ron Carter, Lou Donaldson, Jimmy McGriff, Jimmy Scott, Frank Foster, Leon Thomas, Willis Jackson and other prominent jazz artists. His extraordinary range has also included performances with the rhythm and blues greats Gladys Knight, Dionne Warwick, Etta James, Esther Phillips, the Impressions and the Coasters. Dr. Lonnie Smith's album, Lenox and Seventh Avenue, recorded in Paris, has become a classic jazz tour de force. His most recent CD release Too Damn Hot! is available now on Palmetto Records.

The final concert of the series is a must-see grand finale that features a true all-star band, performing the music of Cafe Bohemia's original music director, the legendary bassist-composer Oscar Pettiford. The band includes Eric Gould (piano/music director), Sean Jones (trumpet), Antonio Hart (alto sax), Don Braden (tenor sax), Robin Eubanks (trombone), Leon Lee Dorsey (bass) and Vincent Ector (drums). With special guest, world renown artist and NEA Jazz Master Ron Carter.
