Alternative jazz group the Kathleen Grace Band (KGB) returns this week from its first SXSW appearance. The band received a standing ovation from a standing room only crowd at the Elephant Room in Austin Friday night. Tracy Brown from the Dallas Morning News described the show this way: “The music was absolutely lovely. I kept trying to think of a word to describe the Los Angeles jazz vocalist whose voice is mellow and pure. The title of her new CD captured the description perfectly: Songbird."

The Kathleen Grace Band celebrates the release of its CD Songbird on Wednesday, March 28th 8:30 PM at the Catalina Bar and Grill in Hollywood. Even before its official release April 2nd, the project has earned international attention. The title track is a finalist in the 2007 International Songwriting Competition (winners will be announced in late March), selected from among thousands of entries.

The music of vocalist Kathleen Grace and guitarist Perry Smith is the heart of the band and capitalizes on their mastery of jazz melody and harmony. Their lyrics, however, take inspiration from folk heroes like Leonard Cohen and Joni Mitchell. Whether a lush, full-band arrangement or an intimate voice-guitar fairytale, all KGB songs reflect the Los Angeles music scene, where genres constantly blend and cross-pollinate.

The release concert will feature a 6-piece band including Perry Smith on guitar, Matt Politano on piano, Sam Minaie on bass, Bobby Wilmore on percussion, Ryan Doyle on Drums.
