Kenny Barron/Mulgrew Miller in Detroit

From the department of when it rains it pours comes the news that two of the leading pianists in contemporary jazz are performing in separate corners of metro Detroit this weekend.

Kenny Barron and Mulgrew Miller were born a dozen years apart but in many ways they could be twins. It's not that they necessarily sound alike, though their styles -- swinging, harmonically sophisticated, melodically imaginative and braised by the blues -- do bear a resemblance to each other. The chief connection between them is that Barron, who turned 65 on Monday, and Miller, 52, are standard bearers for the jazz mainstream and prima facie evidence of its continuing vitality.
