To commemorate the first anniversary of the passing of John Hicks (December 21, 1941 - May 10, 2006), Bret Primack has produced a video tribute to the remarkable pianist on his video blog, Bird Lives.

The video, which includes rare performance video of John Hicks with Art Blakey, documentary footage from one of John's last sessions (Streams of Expression), and clips from the Joe Lovano Nonet live in Paris, is also available on YouTube.

In addition to Bret's memories, the tribute features interviews with Mulgrew Miller and Joe Lovano.

“One of the problems with getting older," Primack believes, “is that we lose more and more of our friends. I produced this video tribute for John Hicks to keep his spirit alive, and to introduce new listeners to his music."

Primack's ongoing video work also includes The Sonny Rollins Podcast, and promotional videos for Joe Lovano.

Bret Primack's YouTube channel, Jazz Video Land, is approaching 500,000 views. “I've got 125 videos up on YouTube and more and more people viewing them every week. Thanks to the low cost of digital video production, and the web functioning quite effectively as a distribution outlet, more and more Jazz artists are using this medium to reach their audience and promote their music. In fact, in my twelve years of working on the web, I've found that the response to my YouTube videos is without a doubt, the strongest of anything I've done."
