Jim Hall, the renowned jazz guitarist who always speaks about music as a communication between artist and audience, has become intrigued by a new concept using the Internet to further that exchange. This new idea was conceived and created by his friend Brian Camelio, president of ArtistShare. Hall is so intrigued, that he has decided to release his next recording through ArtistShare. The as-yet-untitled CD, featuring the Jim Hall Trio with Scott Colley and Lewis Nash, will be recorded live at the Village Vanguard at the end of April 2004.
The ArtistShare model enables fans to participate in the projects of their favorite artists with a bird's eye view of the creative process in progress. Giving one's listening audience a personal view of the creation of their musical investment is something I applaud," says Hall.
Music lovers will not only be able to pre-order the new (limited in number) CD, but they will have access to commentary from the trio in the form of audio clips (maybe even some outtakes), plus audio and video interviews with the musicians, recording engineer, and others. Musicians will be interested in Hall's tips on practicing, preparing for a gig, creating a set list, his approach to improvisation, and his process as a composer. Guitar lovers and players, in particular, will be eager to know Jim's thoughts about guitars and gear. Other participant goodies range from T-shirts and autographed photos, to reserved seats at the live recording, to a brand new Roger Sadowsky Jim Hall Model Guitar. And almost every level of participation includes listing the participant's name in the credits on the web site and/or in the CD booklet.
ArtistShare is about experience as opposed to product," says Camelio. Our goal is to put the art back into the word artist. Our patent-pending process allows fans to participate in an artist's project from beginning to end, enabling the project to be both possible and profitable for the artist as well as a rewarding experience for the fan."
The participant levels are many and varied, and some are limited in number (first come, first serve), so visit www.jimhallmusic.com today and see what intrigues you.
