Jazzing Flamenco
From Madrid to Montreal,
the passion of Espana in TNM!

Montreal, Tuesday, March 17, 2009 - As part of its 30th anniversary, the Festival International de Jazz de Montreal proudly presents the astonishing Jazzing Flamenco, a show created by very prominent Spanish choreographer Antonio Najarro-who scored a hit here with his successful Tango Flamenco in 2005. For six evenings-June 30, at 6 p.m., and from July 2-6, at 8 p.m.-the Theatre du Nouveau Monde will host this visually dazzling spectacle, featuring 18 dancers and musicians reveling in the artistic passion of Espana! This original and unique work felicitously blends two rarely-combined musical styles and might just re-ignite the intense fervour that greeted Tango Flamenco, a blockbuster SRO success during the 26th edition of the Festival! Tickets for these shows go on sale this Saturday, March 21 at noon.

Born of a fervent desire to modernize Spanish classical dance by fusing different musical genres (jazz, blues, soul and flamenco), Jazzing Flamenco is a production boasting an absolutely unique style. Madrid choreographer Antonio Najarro brings originality and a breath of fresh air to the current dance scene. Making daring choices, he aims to liberate-and at the same time, reconcile-tradition and modernity in a skillful creation inspired by two inventive domains, two brilliant cultures, marrying the magic of flamenco to the elegance of jazz.

Antonio Najarro studied classical ballet, Spanish ballet and contemporary dance alongside specialist at some of the most renowned Madrid dance institutions before joining the Ballet Nacional de España in September, 1977. He founded his own company in 2002, now known as the Compania Antonio Najarro, which toured the globe with Tango Flamenco, Flamencoriental and Jazzing Flamenco. He also choreographs for the Olympic Games and the World Figure Skating Championships.
