Jazz Society Seeks New Music Venues in Yuma

Nonprofit groups strive to better their community in lots of ways, but one wants to give Yuma the gift of jazz and blues.

A local music promoter founded the Yuma Jazz Society in August with the goal of creating more jazz and blues events in Yuma, including an annual festival and smaller events ranging from jams to jazz camps.

“The society will be organizing events and promoting jazz to the community," said founder and director Richard Bridgeforth. “We just want to create a jazz society like in the big cities, a family-type thing where folks who love jazz can get together with other jazz lovers."

Bridgeforth said he was inspired to create the Yuma Jazz Society after hearing so many local people say they drive to Phoenix and San Diego for jazz music. He praised existing jazz groups locally like the Yuma Jazz Company, but he stressed that need for more events and an organization to nurture people and events.

Bridgeforth said he envisions the Yuma Jazz Society bringing together musicians, promoters, fans and potential sponsors - all together under the same proverbial umbrella.
