Pianist, multi-keyboardist, and 'Go-Go' pioneer Marc Cary has long charted the cutting-edge on the New York scene as one of the most innovative players in Jazz, Jazztronica and Hip-Hop. Raised in Washington, DC, by a musical family with both African- and Native-American roots, the young Cary explored a variety of instruments before settling on piano as his main axe at the Duke Ellington school.
Upon graduation, he moved to NYC, began touring with Betty Carter and never looked back. A universally respected player in constant demand, Cary is legendary for his versatility which has earned him such diverse comparisons as to Herbie Hancock, Duke Ellington, and Randy Weston. In fact, Down Beat magazine's April '06 issue hit the stands with Marc's name on the cover as one of four most 'multi-dimensional' keyboardists in jazz today (profiled in Howard Mandel's feature “Keys to the Future").
Alternately percussive and subtle, animated and introspective, Cary balances energy and lyricism with a depth of personal expression that is rare. His sideman credits include work with Roy Hargrove, Betty Carter and Abbey Lincoln. Currently Marc has been burning up the scene with his much-lauded Fender Rhodes playing, his Moog stylings for Stefon Harris' “Blackout", and he is regularly tapped for his acoustic piano work by Wynton Marsalis.
Focus, the Motema label debut of Marc's Trio, introduces Marc's new sound, which he calls 'classical-indigenous jazz for the people'. In stores June 27th.
