Organ legend Trudy Pitts comes together with an all-star band for a rare NYC appearance.

Fresh from her headline triumph at the Kennedy Center Salute to Women in Jazz, Trudy Pitts is back on tour. She recently appeared on National Public Radio's acclaimed series, Piano Jazz, with Marion McPartland. Dr. Billy Taylor describes her as the leading exponent of the organ as a jazz instrument.

You may know her for El Hombre with Pat Martino for Prestige. She is best known for her recordings with Rahsaan Roland Kirk and Grover Washington. If you don't know Trudy Pitts--well, John Coltrane learned from her and, not incidentally, enjoyed her Sunday family dinners. Whatever your knowledge of Ms. Pitts, do not miss the unusual chance to hear her in this intimate setting.

She is joined by critically acclaimed tenor saxophonist and SMOKE regular Eric Alexander. Alexander co-founded the sextet, One For All. Their first release was voted one of 1997's top five albums by Jazz Times. Eric has toured extensively with Pat Martino, and recorded Stone Blue with him for Blue Note. His recent High Note release featuring Charles Earland was the WBGO pick-of-the-month.

Guitar master DeVos toured extensively with Ms. Pitts during his early career, then played and recorded with other organ virtuosi: Richard “Groove" Holmes, Charles “The Mighty Burner" Earland, and Jimmy McGriff. Fresh from recording a tribute album to Earland with Joey DeFrancesco for High Note, DeVos' 1999 release for Savant records, Breaking the Ice, has earned high praise: Audiophile Voice, “He does his Midas thing, turning everything he touches into blues." Just Jazz Guitar, “ DeVos is a master. His sound is to die for, rich, full, deep positive, round and warm." He, too, has headlined at SMOKE.

Joe Farnsworth is a SMOKE stalwart, appearing there with his brother, saxophonist John Farnsworth, and as part of One For All. He has recently appeared with Cedar Walton, George Coleman, Harold Mabern, and Diana Krall.

Fabulously renovated, SMOKE is fast becoming one of NYC's premiere rooms for jazz. Do not miss this event.
