Banff International Workshop in Jazz and Creative Music
Program dates: May 17, 2010 - June 5, 2010
Application deadline: January 15, 2010

Being here at Banff made me realize that each artist has the duty of presenting their art with honesty and clarity, through whatever moves their heart and hopefully moves the audience into that world.
James B. Lewis,

The Banff Centre is Canada's creative leader in arts and culture.

Our mission is Inspiring Creativity. In The Banff Centre's powerful mountain setting in the heart of Banff National Park, exceptional artists and leaders from around the world create and perform new works of art; share skills and knowledge in an interdisciplinary environment; and explore ideas and develop solutions in the arts and leadership.

Arts programs are at the core of The Banff Centre. Programming supports the commissioning and creation of new work by individual artists and arts collectives, and provides resources for collaboration and applied research. Training and professional development at the post-graduate level in more than a dozen art forms including Aboriginal arts, music, theatre, dance, opera, literature, ceramics, print-making, painting, papermaking, photography, sculpture, audio engineering, digital film and video, and new media. Work is showcased in public performance, events, and exhibitions throughout the year, culminating in the annual Banff Summer Arts Festival.

Under the leadership of trumpeter/composer Dave Douglas and his hand-picked group of leading jazz faculty, this unique program leaves the rigid academic environment behind, encouraging creativity and facilitating leaps of artistic innovation. Participants benefit from daily master classes, small ensemble rehearsals, and common sessions with some of the worlds most inspiring jazz musicians. Club and concert performances, recording sessions, and opportunities to workshop new compositions allow artists to further develop original music in a collaborative and supportive environment.

While pre-formed groups are encouraged to apply, individual applications are adjudicated, and acceptance to the program will take all factors into account. Participants are encouraged to form groups during the workshop.

Creative Residencies in the fall and winter are also available for jazz musicians, either as individuals or groups.
